Hi. I'm Brian and I'll try to help. Since Verizon has transitioned from AOL to Yahoo, you may need to generate an app password to use in the settings instead of the password you use when logging in with a web browser. See https://help.yahoo.com/kb/SLN15241.html Note that this web site, while not a Microsoft site, appears to be safe and contain accurate information. It may contain ads and use cookies, though, so be aware.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

Hi Brian,

Thank you for responding. I don't believe your answer addresses my current problem.

I have an email address set up in Yahoo/AOL online. I had generated a password to set up the account recently.

I have the same email account on my iPhone.

The problem is trying to set it up on my PC.

Going through the setup in Outlook is where one of the problems lies. I ultimately arrive at a window requesting a 6-digit code. The password is not a 6-digit code. I have 2 factor identification turned off from the AOL website, email settings.

The Outlook setup does not provide a place to enter the password I set up on the AOL site.

I remember when AOL changed their log in system several years ago, I had to generate a passcode unique to each device. This doesn't seem to be the case anymore. They seem to have moved to 2 factor identification. When I had turned on 2 factor identification on the AOL site, the codes for my Outlook that were sent, never arrived before the time limit. Eventually, I received the codes, but they were no longer valid.

I tried calling AOL customer service. All they could do was send me to the instructions from their website. They wanted me to pay for tech support. I felt that their code sender was malfunctioning. The customer service rep told me I could turn off 2 factor identification. That did not solve the problem.

Yes. I had already done that.

I have since called AOL.

Apparently, the panel that opens in Outlook 356 while trying to set up email is a Yahoo panel. Yahoo owns AOL. AOL owns Verizon emails. The companies are not connected for the email service. I can't use the Yahoo window for AOL emails, but I had no other options.

I found this article online:

https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/outlook_com/forum/all/outlook-365-keeps-changing-verizonaol-settings-to/7d0154d7-b6bc-40ed-a080-2446abc0a43f

It was helpful. I found the mail app in the Control Panel. It let me set up all my IMAP server settings. It wasn't a Yahoo panel. It still did not connect. I put in my correct password (as per my account log in online) and all the IMAP settings in the AOL article you had linked me to.

It still did not connect.

The server is the same server that previously worked before I deleted my email.

Since it's Yahoo, you must, as I said, generate an app password which is distinct from the "account log in online," as also described in the thread you cite.

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.

I don't have an email account with Yahoo. I have an email account with AOL. Yahoo, which purchased AOL, maintains two systems. One for Yahoo and a separate system for AOL.

The Yahoo panel does not request a password. It requires a verification code that changes every 60 seconds.

AOL also requires an app password. See https://help.aol.com/articles/Create-and-manage-app-password

Yes. AOL does.

The windows 11 setup does not give you a choice to set up AOL, only Yahoo. New Outlook doesn’t even allow setting up IMAP accounts.

You are not understanding my problem.

You try setting up an IMAP account. Tell me if you can set up an AOL IMAP.

What happens when you click Add account, then enter your Verizon address and then click Continue? Are you asked for a password? If so, enter the app password and click Done. What happens then?

If you have any questions, don't hesitate to ask.
